The Sitting

Commissioning a portrait is a big undertaking for you as much as me. But don't be put off, it's because we work together that that we can make something truly special!
We'll stage the sitting in your home, it's the stage for your family life and should be part of the portrait. I’ll talk to you about everyone who's to appear in the portrait to get a feeling for the family dynamic; I want to encourage interaction during the sitting. We’ll identify objects that can be used to dress the picture. They might be photographs, paintings, books, sports or hobby equipment or perhaps family heirlooms. These are vital because they'll load the picture with symbolism and instil it with the poignancy we seek. We'll sort all this out when I visit and I'll design the all-important lighting too.

On the day of the shoot we’ll arrive in time to prepare the setting. My assistant will sit in for each person while I adjust the lights. Once we’ve got it right we'll called you to sit and start capturing images with a Nikon digital camera.

The portrait is constructed from several images layered together. I choose the best smiles, cheekiest or most expressive looks. I don't rely on everyone giving me their best at the same time. The family pets are vital components of the portrait, so I make sure they are all in there!
